Newbury mother records advert with Stephen Fry

The advert urges people to devote time to the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal in March

A WASH Common mother-of-two has won a national competition to become the voice of a new radio advert for Marie Curie Cancer Care, alongside actor and screenwriter Stephen Fry.

The advert, which will run on national radio stations throughout the month, encourages people to devote an hour or two of their time to help fundraisers collect for the charity's Great Daffodil Appeal in March.

Edwina Gudgeon, a family support officer at John Rankin Junior School, Newbury, entered the competition on the charity's Facebook page after experiencing the support of Marie Curie nurses, who looked after her sister Alice at home before she died in 2010.

The 39-year-old said: “All my sister wanted to do was leave hospital and go home. Marie Curie made this possible by providing nurses to look after her at home. Ever since I've helped fundraise for the charity and last year my husband, Marc, ran the Great South Run for them.”

Mrs Gudgeon joined Fry at a London studio to record the advert and brought her eldest daughter and QI fan, Ellie, aged 11, along with her.

“My daughter and I had a wonderful time meeting Stephen Fry, who gave up his time for free. He was absolutely lovely, we had lots of pictures with him and got his autograph,” she added.
