Newbury MP Laura Farris warns constituents and parliamentarians to be cautious online after Twitter hack

Newbury MP Laura Farris has been hacked on Twitter this morning (Saturday, February 26).

Her social media account sent out direct messages to those who are followed by the MP.

Speaking to Newbury Today, the MP urged her followers to not click on any links that they may have received from her today.

Following an email that initially didn't read as suspicious, Mrs Farris clicked on a link that she believes may have caused the later hacking of her Twitter account.

She said that a friend got in contact with her and asked if she had meant to send out a message containing a hyperlink.

Mrs Farris said that she couldn't see any outgoing messages, but a screenshot from her friend showed it to be from her account- it was the same message Mrs Farris had recieved via email.

Fellow Parliamentarians also got in contact to notify the Newbury MP that they too had received the same message.

She said: "This all happened over 25 minutes."

She noted that online hacking is a heightened risk due current political events and said: "Obviously, in light of everything, I think parliamentarians have to be aware of this. The email that I received said it was from Twitter so I did click through to the link."

She added: "We don't know what the next stage will look like. I will contact Parliamentary Authority and let them know."

She has since reported the activity and hasn't received any more messages from concerned recipients.

Mrs Farris took to Twitter today (February 26) at 12.26pm to say: "My account was hacked earlier today. It has been reported to Twitter.

"To those I follow, please do not click any link from me that may appear in your DMs."
