Newbury paramedic appeals for information after car is vandalised

The paramedic, who did not want to be named, due to fear of reprisals, said he left his metallic orange Peugot 307 parked at the ambulance station, in Hawthorn Road, on Good Friday.
On return to the station, after a 12-hour nightshift, he found someone had attempted to smash his bonnet and windscreen.
“I couldn’t see out of the windscreen, to drive home,” he said.
“I was heartbroken, as immediately I could see I would incur a fair cost.
“My wife is due to have a baby in two weeks, and the last thing I wanted was to have to ring her at 3am.”
In order to get home to Thatcham, he telephoned his wife, who is expecting the couple’s second child.
“She was shocked and very angry,” he said, a paramedic of 13 years experience.
“I got home to rest and my wife went back to the ambulance station to deal with the (police) scenes of crime officer and also the AA,” he added.
The incident, he said resulted in the loss of his no claims bonus, plus an £80 excess fee from his insurance company for the windscreen repair, which cost £800, due to the high specification of the accoustic proof screen.
But he had praise for the police, the AA and his insurance company for their prompt action, with the windscreen replaced in around six hours.
He had heard rumours, he continued, of cars vandalised in the crescent situated behind the ambulance station – premises shared with Newbury Fire Station – including wing mirrors of cars being broken off.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact the police on the non emergency telephone number, 101.
Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
