Decision on return of Newbury Parkrun to Greenham Common 'being made'
A decision on when Newbury Parkrun will return to Greenham Common is due soon, land managers have said.
More than 500 Parkrun events across the country have been granted full landowner permission to return, but Newbury is not among them at this stage.
The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), which manages Greenham Common on behalf of West Berkshire Council, has said on social media that a decision is being made at the moment.
NewburyToday has contacted BBOWT and West Berkshire Council for further information.
Newbury Parkrun has said on social media that it is working hard to bring the event back.
It said: "Like you we have been eagerly awaiting news of the return of our beloved event at Greenham Common.
"Parkrun HQ has been working tirelessly with landowners to secure permissions for events to return and has amazingly achieved over 90 per cent of events to restart on 26th June.
"However, unfortunately we have to announce that currently we have NOT been granted landowner permission to restart at Newbury.
"Be rest assured, parkrun HQ and your local event director Neil Germain are not giving up and are doing all in their power to bring our event back.
"We hope to have more positive news in the near future."
Newbury Parkrun has also been approached for further information.
Chief operating officer parkrun global, Tom Williams, said: "We made the announcement that we now have enough permissions in place for 5k events to return on Saturday 26 June as planned.
"We know that, on Monday, the Prime Minister will be confirming the details and timing of Step 4, and that his announcement may have a material impact on our ability to reopen. However, we are celebrating today, as we now know that parkrun will return in England before too long, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone back."
A list of events with landowner permission is being maintained here
Mr Williams said: "Where events do not yet have permission, we will be continuing our work with landowners through next week and it remains possible for those parkruns to reopen on the same timeline.
"Once we understand any implications from the government’s announcement on Monday, we will provide an update on our position."
