Newbury’s Civic Award winners announced

Newbury Town Council introduced the Newbury Town Civic Award 15 years ago, with the Newbury Town Young Persons Civic Award for 25-year-olds and under launched in 2008.
The awards, which are designed to recognise exceptional contribution individuals make to their communities on a voluntary basis, were presented at the town council’s annual town meeting at the town hall on Monday night.
Mayor of Newbury, Jeff Beck, said: “You are all winners because people consider you to have done great work for our community.
“The community respects you and that’s very, very important because the more people that work for their community the better our society becomes.”
The winner of the Newbury Town Civic Award was Mick Hutchins, who is chairman of two registered charities: the West Berkshire Independent Living Network steering group, and the West Berkshire Disability Alliance.
Twelve-year-old Martin Fisher, a pupil of Trinity School, Newbury, picked up the Newbury Town Young Person's Civic Award.
Martin volunteers for UK Lifeguards; giving generously of his time for lifeguard training and charity swims for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.
