Falkland Primary School closed amid health and safety concerns

A Newbury primary school remains closed this morning (Tuesday) due to a “health and safety issue”.

Falkland Primary School, on Andover Road, did not reopen as expected yesterday, after the half term break.

The school has said it is working with West Berkshire Council’s critical incidents team to “find a solution” to reopen as soon as possible.

Parents have contacted the Newbury Weekly News and said they believe that the site was deemed unsafe after a water leak during half term wiped out the electrics.

There is not believed to be any electricity or heating currently at the site.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday, the school said: “Be rest assured that the school is working closely with WB’s Critical Incidents Team to find a solution as soon as possible.

“The decision to close the school has not been taken lightly but the safety of staff and pupils is paramount.”

Staff were also pictured at St George’s Church, which is next to the school, yesterday (Monday) where they had gathered to plan the next steps.

It is not the first time that a water issue has led to the school being closed.

In March 2022 a visit by the fire brigade took an unusual turn when a broken water hydrant led to all pupils being sent home.

This is a developing story and we will have more details as soon as they are available.

Both Falkland Primary School and West Berkshire Council have been contacted for comment.
