Newbury schools closed tomorrow due to Storm Eunice

Some schools in Newbury have announced that they're closed tomorrow due to the incoming storm.

Trinity School, Fir Tree Primary School and Speenhamland Primary School will all be closed tomorrow (Friday) after the Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for Storm Eunice.

Newbury College and University College Newbury have also announced they will be closed with learning taking place online.

In North Hampshire, secondary school The Clere in Burghclere will also be closed.

It said on Facebook: "Further to our previous communication we are sorry to say that we have made the very hard decision to close the school on Friday 18th February due to the developing high winds forecast for our area throughout the day.

"Due to our location we are particularly prone to power cuts and we have concerns about the uncertainty that even if it is safe for the children to get to school in the morning it may not be safe for them to return home.

"The site also has a high chance of flying debris and falling trees.

"Please look out for a message in the morning about remote learning for your child."

The red warning is in effect tomorrow across northern areas of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and the southern coast of Wales around the Bristol Channel between the hours of 7am and noon.

Fir Tree said remote learning would be set via Tapestry and Teams.

An amber warning has been issued across the whole of Southern England all day tomorrow as well.

Storm Eunice’s extremely strong winds are expected to cause damage to buildings and homes, falling trees, large coastal waves and significant travel restrictions in red weather areas.

The warnings are only in effect tomorrow, with the weather likely to be less severe over the rest of the weekend.
