Newbury scoops four awards at inaugural sports ceremony

Guests were honoured at the inaugural Inspiration and Participation Awards ceremony, held by Get Berkshire Active (GBA), to recognise Berkshire’s contribution to excellence and inspiring people to participate in sport.
Headmaster of Park House School, Derek Peaple, was presented with the Sir John Madejski Berkshire Legacy Award by BBC Radio Berkshire’s Sports Editor, Tim Dellor, for his exceptional contribution to sport in the county.
Mr Peaple said: “I’m absolutely thrilled for students and staff at the school and all the hard work the teams have put in being recognised.
“The evening was a fantastic reflection of what the Get Berkshire Active team does to raise the profile of sport in schools and the community.”
CEO of Get Berkshire Active, Mark Lawrie, said: “Derek is regarded as an inspiration by all who have the good fortune to work with him in Berkshire and is an extremely worthy winner of the inaugural Sir John Madejski Award.
“Get Berkshire Active is extremely fortunate to have him as a Board Member and the Berkshire School Games would not have the vision and drive that it currently enjoys without Derek at the helm.”
Other Newburians receiving awards were Park House teacher, Doug Cook, who received a Lifetime Recognition award for his 51 years of inspirational teaching.
Park House student and Newbury Athletics Club member Alexandre Cranix, won the Junior Male Sports Personality award for combining his performance and representation of sport as a high jump champion and games maker at the Olympics.
West Berkshire School Sports Partnership Manager, James Mandry, was awarded the Individual School Games Award for his role in promoting the Berkshire School Games.
Over 240 people including 100 winners and nominees were joined by a host of Olympians connected to Berkshire including Team GB hockey bronze medallist and GBA Brand Ambassador, Hannah MacLeod at the Madejski Stadium on Febraury 9.
