Newbury artists, husband and wife team Berkshire Printmakers, are proud to announce they are now members of the Heritage Craft Association and entitled to display the Heritage Craft emblem.

They heard the news back in September that screen printing had been accepted as a Heritage Craft and immediately applied to become members.

To be regarded in this category. A heritage craft is defined as a practice which employs manual dexterity and skill and an understanding of traditional materials, design and techniques and which has been practised for two or more successive generations.

Silkscreen printing was first made popular in 1960s by the likes of Pop artist Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi.

Sarah Martinez reflects that she set up Berkshire Printmakers with her husband Cipriano to preserve the silkscreen printing techniques as she had realised that it was being taught less and less in schools and being replaced by digital images.
