Newbury sisters make fundraising a cakewalk
After losing their dad, Dean, to cancer, Newbury twins Leah and Leisha Hayward, aged nine, were so determined to turn his death into a positive they set about selling their toys to raise money for a cancer charity, and at the weekend held a cake sale raising £340 in the process.
Older sister Liane, aged 26, said the two girls had organised everything and drew up handouts to put around their neighbourhood of Henshaw Crescent in Wash Common, and had done their family proud.
“They wanted to do everything themselves, they were really good and have been great. It’s been a tough time for everyone but the pair of them have been truly amazing.
“A couple of weeks ago they started taking toys outside and trying to sell them to people going past. When I asked them what they were doing they said they wanted to make money to help people get better. Then they had the idea of this cake sale.
“There are too many people to thank individually but they will all know who they are. I would like to thank everyone who baked, brought and donated to the girls cake sale on Sunday.”
Mr Hawyard was 49 when he died, and had battled the disease for five years, having gone into partial remission at one point before tragedy struck.
The two girls remained modest in spite of their special efforts.
“I was thinking about people getting better because of us,” Leah said.
Leisha added: “I was really pleased with the support from family friends and neighbours.”
The money will be presented to Newbury and District Cancer Care.
