Newbury street remains closed as SGN continue to search for source of gas leak
A Newbury road remains closed as SGN continue to search for the cause of a gas leak in the town centre.
An emergency closure of Cheap Street began last Friday (June 9), while the utility company carried out works to secure a gas leak.
But today (Wednesday), when the road should have reopened, West Berkshire Council confirmed that SGN was “having difficulty in locating the leak”.
The road is therefore expected to remain closed for several more days, with a current completion date of Monday (June 19).
“Please bear with us,” the council urged.
Residential access will be maintained throughout the works and a diversion will be signed on site.
There will be a partial lift of restrictions over the Park Way bridge, during the closure, to allow access to the car parks in the Wharf.
All vehicles will be allowed to travel along Park Way to Wharf Road, southbound, to access the car parks.
However, the restrictions will remain in place for buses and taxis only to travel from Wharf Road to Parkway, northbound.
Exit from the Wharf for all other vehicles will be via Bear Lane.
The diversion route will take vehicles via Bear Lane, the A339 southbound, St John’s Road, Newtown Road, Bartholomew Street and Market Street.
The anti-clockwise diversion route is via Market Street, Bartholomew Street, Newtown Road, St John’s Road, the A339 northbound and into Cheap Street – as far as Market Street only.
