Newbury student's action movie in running for industry award

MAX Project: Chase Game makes WJEC Moving Image Awards short list

A SHORT action film produced by a sixth form student at St Bartholomew’s School has been nominated for a film award.

Omar Soomro’s MAX Project: Chase Game has been shortlisted for the WJEC Moving Image Awards (watch the film below).

The two-and-a-half minute actioner was filmed by the 18-year-old as part of his AS media studies coursework and impressed his tutors enough for it to be chosen for entry into the competition.

The short sequence was subsequently named for ‘special consideration’ by the judges and the winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony at London’s BFI Southbank on January 13.

After the film was shortlisted, Omar said: “I was thrilled to hear I had been nominated for this award.

“I drew my inspiration for my film sequence from my interest in the action thriller genre and particularly enjoy studying media as it enables me to be expressive and creative.

“I am currently working on a new short film, Balloon, and am hoping to pursue a career in film production.”

Media studies subject leader at St Bart’s, Glyn Evans, said: “Our congratulations go to Omar.

“We have a popular and thriving media and film department and students produce work of a very high standard.

“This year, as well as Omar’s work, we were pleased to submit film sequences from Jack Dembrey (GCSE media), Kieran Wall and Lizzy Jones (AS film) and Jake Mawson (A2 film).

“All four entries can been viewed on the department’s YouTube channel (user bartsmediafilm).

“This year’s cohort are now embarking on their production coursework and we look forward to entering a strong selection in 2017.”
