Newbury supermarket donates trees for Victoria Park makeover
Sainsbury's also provides surplus shrubs
SAINSBURY’S in Newbury has donated a selection of surplus trees and plants to the town council to be used in the ongoing Victoria Park ‘makeover’.
The six semi-mature trees and a variety of shrubs have been planted around the perimeter of the bowls club (and also at St John’s Memorial Gardens) after extension works to the Newbury store meant they had to be removed.
Sainsbury’s Newbury store manager Rob Barnes said: “We hate waste, so it is great that the local community will benefit from the trees and shrubs which were removed during work to improve our groceries online operation.”
Contractor Williams Southern Limited was able to use site machinery to carefully remove the trees and shrubs from the store’s grounds, and worked with Newbury Town Council’s contractor The Landscape Group to ensure that the plants did not suffer any trauma during the process of replanting.
Leader of the council Dave Goff said: “We want to thank Sainsbury’s for taking the time and trouble to contact us and their contractor for helping us to move and plant all of these trees and shrubs.
“The plants, once fully mature, will further enhance the surrounds at the bowls club and the bedding at St John’s Memorial Gardens.”
