Newbury sweeps double horticultural win with Silver Gilt award
Newbury has been awarded the Silver Gilt Award by the Thames and Chiltern in Bloom campaign.
The prestigious award has been given to Newbury as well as the ‘Best Large Town Trophy’ which was a first-time honour for the town.
The ‘Best Large Town Trophy’ recognises the teamwork that has been carried out in green spaces across Newbury.
This included graffiti removal, litter picking, and the care of community gardens and open spaces.
Thames and Chiltern in Bloom said this was all thanks to the efforts of volunteers, community groups, contractors and council staff.
Cllr Ian Jee, Chair of the Council’s Green Spaces Working Group said, “We are so very proud of this recognition for our beautiful town, and a heartfelt thank you goes to everyone involved”.
After a six-year break from the competition, Newbury has also again earned a Silver Gilt award, following its first win in 2019.
This was due to the vibrant gardens, environmental responsibility and community spirit, said judges.
As well as the Silver Gilt, the town also received special recognition for the Secret Garden Project, which was presented with the Award for Community Engagement.
This honour was given in acknowledgement to Community Matters West Field group who worked to create a welcoming, shared green space for the area.
Cllr Gary Norman, Leader of the Council, said, “This is a truly amazing result for Newbury and a testament to the dedication of so many people across our town.
Winning the Silver Gilt and the Best Large Town Trophy shows what can be achieved when we all work together for a common goal. We are especially proud of the recognition for the Secret Garden Project, which embodies the very best of community engagement.”
The awards reflect not only the horticultural achievements of the town but also the commitment to making Newbury a beautiful, sustainable, and enjoyable place for all who live, work, and visit.”
