Newbury picnic concert takes flight with How to Train Your Dragon and Flight of the Bumblebee




Newbury Symphony Orchestra is joining with the St Bartholomew’s School Concert Orchestra to present an evening of music to inspire flights of imagination. With a programme including How to Train Your Dragon and the Flight of the Bumblebee, the orchestra aims to attract a family audience of music lovers of all ages.

The early evening event includes a fancy-dress competition for children. The winner will be invited to conduct the orchestra for one of the concert pieces.

Guests at the NSO Summer concert are encouraged to bring a picnic and a rug and enjoy the music in the informal setting of the semi-open air St Bart’s Hub. There will be a fancy-dress competition searching for the most inventive audience member dressed in a flying theme, which will be judged by orchestra leader Wendy Clark and conductor Neil Farrow. The winner will be invited to conduct the orchestra for one of the concert pieces.

Orchestra chairman David Cooper said: “In our summer concert we are aiming to inspire the imagination in the family audience, some of the youngest of whom might be attending their first concert. The programme is deliberately varied with music from the worlds of Hollywood, pop music and the classical repertoire. The vibe of this event is informal and fun with something for people of all ages to enjoy.”

Let’s Fly takes place on Saturday, June 17, from 5pm – 6.30pm at St Bartholomew’s School Hub, Andover Road. Tickets are £5 for adults and £2.50. for under-18s and £!5.00 for a family. They can be bought online from the NSO website www.newburysymphonyorchestra.org or purchased on the door.
