Health and safety fears force temporary shop closure

Debris falling from a building in Newbury town centre today (Saturday) resulted in a cordon being thrown around the area and forced a shop closure, due to health and safety fears.

Firefighters from Newbury Fire Station were called at 12pm to a building in Mansion House Street, following reports of loose, falling masonry.

An aerial platform ladder from Reading was also called to the scene and firefighters inspected the exterior of the building and made the scene safe, before departing three hours later.

The women's fashion shop, shop, Phase Eight, in Mansion House Street was temporarily closed , with a notice posted on the door stating the closure was due to health and safety concerns.
