Newbury Town Council has reached its silver anniversary since its foundation in 1997.

A celebratory event was held at the council offices last Friday in recognition of its 25-year achievement.

The evening was attended by many from in and around the town who are or have been involved with the council, including its former mayors.

Pupils from St Bartholomew’s School provided musical performances and mayor Billy Drummond gave a speech and raised a glass.

Members of local charities also attended, including Volunteer Centre West Berkshire director Garry Poulson and representatives from Thames Valley Police.

Mayor of Newbury Billy Drummond said: "It was a really good evening.

"We had fun and games with Garry Poulson winning a quiz."

Speaking about being the mayor at such a milestone for the council, Mr Drummond said: "It started off slow because of Covid but it's picked up. It's a great honour to be the 425th mayor in Newbury."

The council has also reviewed its history, noting its memorable achievements from establishing the Newbury Town civic awards and youth council in 1998.

In 1999 the authority voted ‘no’ to new councillor robes and the mayor hosted an annual reception.

The new millennium began with the introduction of a leader and deputy leader of the council.

This was followed by new staffing structures, a celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the introduction of the first junior mayor in the following years.

In 2005, the Newbury Mosaic was unveiled next to the library and the Couple in Conversation sculpture was unveiled at the Robin Hood roundabout the next year.

In 2006, the first online blog to be run by a Newbury mayor was launched.

More recent memories were observed from the Olympic Torch Parade in 2012 and the Newbury Town Flag creation in 2013.

Celebratory events are to continue with a family fun day in Victoria Park in June, two Beating the Bounds events and an annual bowls match in August.
