Newbury Town Council unveils further Olympic torch details

The Olympic torch is scheduled to come through West Berkshire, including Theale, Thatcham and Newbury, on Wednesday, July 11.
Newbury Town Council has this week confirmed what events will be taking place in the town when the torch passes through between about 11-11.30am.
Mayor of Newbury Arthur Johnson has revealed there will be a BMX display in the Market Place, where a huge 11ft tall, vertical halfpipe will be temporarily erected.
Street performers will also entertain the crowds, with an art trail around the town, and activities in Victoria Park.
Parkway will also be hosting a street party from 11am to 6pm with music, entertainment and exclusive one day offers for pass holders available from Corn Exchange and Barclays Bank in Parkway.
Mayor of Newbury Mr Johnson said: “The town is putting on a wide range of activities for you to enjoy and get involved in on the day. The Olympic Torch Relay Community Task Force has worked really hard, with community, schools, leisure and business input.
“Newbury really is the place to see the Olympic Torch. There will be loads to see and do, to make a real day of it”.
Olympic fever is already building in the district with West Berkshire schools holding their own torch relay last Wednesday.
The thirty-six mile torch relay started at John O’Gaunt Community Technology College, Hungerford, and finished at Theale Green Community School.
The Theale Green team, made up of headteacher, Sue Marshall, deputy headteacher, Robin Bertrand, and members of the PE Department, took the torch home through the village to the school.
The event was organised to promote the West Berkshire Schools Games, which is due to take place at Thames Valley Athletic Club, Eton, between June 26 and 28, while the Olympic Games in London will start on July 27.
British Paralympian rower Vicki Hansford attended the relay, and later gave an inspirational presentation to pupils and staff about gaining a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
