Newbury Town Hall hosts twin town youth





A total 32 visitors, aged 16 to 25, from Newbury’s six twin towns participated in the visit, organised by young members of the Newbury Twin Town Association.
On Saturday morning, Mayor of Newbury, Arthur Johnson, hosted a visit by the group to Newbury Town Hall, where they were joined by the junior mayor, Cameron Smyth.
“I told them a bit about Newbury - and how fantastic it is,” said Mr Johnson.
They also tried on the ceremonial robes, held the mace and found out about the work of the mayor and the Young People’s Council during the 45 minute visit, including refreshments.
The theme of the week’s visit was Sport and Games, and groups from each country have been teaching the others a particular game that is popular in their home town.
Other activities included visits to the Olympic Park in London as well as trips to Thorpe Park and the beach. The group enjoyed the Newbury Waterways Festival on Sunday July 22)and exploring the town, while taking part in a walking quiz.
Spokeswoman for the association, Rachel Haslam, said: The young people of the Newbury Twin Town Association have done a fantastic job in arranging a varied programme of activities for the visitors. The group are already looking forward to their meeting in Eeklo, Belgium next year.’
Newbury’s six twin towns include: Bagnols-sur-ceze, in the south of France; Braunfels, near Frankfurt, Germany; Eeklo, Belgium; Feltre, in the foothills of the Dolomite mountains, Italy; Kiskunfelegyh, south east of Budapest, Hungary; and Carcaixent, Spain.
