Newbury woman's charity work recognised

Macmillan Cancer Support volunteer 's national award

A Newbury woman has received a national award recognising her work leading the Newbury fundraising committee for Macmillan Cancer Support over the past decade.

Erica Tipton, pictured left, received a volunteer award from Macmillan Cancer Support at the weekend – the Richard Hambro Award – at the charity’s Volunteers’ Award Conference in Manchester, which marked the start of Volunteers’ Week, which runs until Sunday.

The award honours volunteers who lead and manage groups to an exceptional standard, or inspire others to achieve outstanding success.

Mrs Tipton said she felt surprised and very privileged to have been recommended for the award and continued:

“My results are due to an amazing team – my committee who are equally committed in giving so much of their time to this great charity which so many of us are now reliant upon.”

The fundraising manager for the charity’s West Berkshire branch, Linda Whitby, who nominated Mrs Tipton, said: “In her role, Erica oversees the partnership with the Newbury Cancer Trust, which organises the annual Newbury Carol Concert that raises around £20,000 each year.

“But she’s always looking for new ways to raise funds as well – such as the successful bridge tournaments which are now a permanent fixture in the committee’s calendar.”
