Newbury Xmas lights could be yours....if you have a spare £5k
Newbury Town Council is selling its festive lights, which will illuminate the town for the final time when they are switched on next Friday.
From next year, Newbury’s business improvement district (BID) will take over the running of the Christmas lights in the town prompting the town council to sell its lights as they are surplus to requirements.
The six-year-old lights are on the market for £5,000 for the set, although part sales will also be considered, according to the town council’s services manager, Granville Taylor.
“Somebody looking to buy a set of Christmas lights will be getting a very good deal,” Mr Taylor said. “We valued the lights after speaking to Christmas light suppliers.
“People wanting to view them can see them in situ when they are turned on next Friday.
“When we took over the contract six years ago, we sold off the old lights and recouped some of the money back, so we’re just doing the same again.”
Meanwhile Newbury BID manager, Russell Downing, is excited to be taking over the responsibility for the Christmas lights next year.
He said: “We’re hoping to make it a whole day event which will culminate with the lights being switched on. We are also hoping to move the event forward into November, but at the moment we’re just putting ideas together and seeing what can be achieved.
“We need to speak to lighting companies first of all to get an idea of cost.”
