Newbury youngsters get on their bikes to support young cousins with cancer
Walker brothers Fergus, aged 13, Oliver, aged 11, and Jonny, aged five, all mounted their bikes for a school-to-school ride in honour of their cousins George Woodhead, aged 12, and Katie Woodhead, aged eight.
In February, George was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, and is still undergoing treatment, and seven months later his sister Katie was diagnosed with germ cell cancer and is having chemotherapy to treat a tumour in her stomach.
The boys have already raised more than £14,000 for Clic Sargent.
Fergus and Oliver, accompanied by their parents Simon and Rebecca Walker, kick-started the cycle from Horris Hill, Newbury, to Brockhurst, where they were joined by Jonny to cycle to his school Harriet House, in Frilsham, onto to Pangbourne College, and completed at The Manor, in Abingdon.
George and Katie saw the boys off and were at each school when they arrived. Their sister Izzy, aged 15, also joined her cousins for the final 10 miles of the feat, where George and Katie awaited them.
They completed the challenge at 4.10pm.
Mrs Walker said: “Despite the bad weather, everybody came out and all the schools really helped the boys along.
“George and Katie were overwhelmed by how much support they had from people they didn’t even know. They have been really touched by people’s generosity and support.
“The boys were so enthusiastic. I couldn’t have been more proud of their enthusiasm.
“To start off in those sorts of weather conditions and continue all the way was brilliant.”
She added thanks to Banjo Cycles which has donated bikes and cycling gear for the challenge.
