Newbury's BooBars named best takeaway in the South

Market Place smokehouse run by former Newbury firefighter and wife

A NEWBURY smokehouse deli opened just over a year ago by a former firefighter and his wife is the best takeaway in the South – and that’s official.

BooBars, in the Market Place, beat off stiff opposition at the Food Awards England 2016, at the Mercure Hotel Piccadilly in Manchester on Monday, to win a trophy as the south’s best takeaway.

The Kintbury proprietors of BooBars, Sid Shepherd and his wife Charlotte, said that they had “travelled Route 66 to bring back the authentic taste of American barbecue.

"These travels are what inspired us to create our very own slaws, rubs and sauces to complement classic barbecue favourites”.

The meat at BooBars smokehouse is cooked low and slow for a minimum of 15 hours over a traditional wood fire which makes it “exceptionally tender with a rich smoky flavour”.

The award was presented by Miss United Kingdom Supranational Rachelle Perez, who hosted the ceremony.

There were three awards, for the best takeaways in the North, South and Midlands, and the best of these went on to win the title of best takeaway in the country.

Mr Shepherd said afterwards that the couple were disappointed to be pipped to the post for the national title, but winning the crown for best takeaway in the South had compensated them.

“Setting up a business is really hard work and we couldn’t have done it without all at BooBars working extremely hard and the support of all our customers,” said Mr Shepherd.

“We would like to thank everyone.”

BooBars, which opened in July last year, also just missed out on securing the title of ‘best newcomer’ when it came second on Thursday at the finals of the regional food and drink awards organised by Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Life magazine.
