Three Bartholomew Street food outlets with poor hygiene ratings

Caffé Nero in Newbury’s Bartholomew Street has been told to improve its food hygiene standards.

The popular coffee shop was give two out of a possible five hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency.

In an inspection last November, the café was deemed in need of improving hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

Two other food outlets on Bartholomew Street have also been told to improve food hygiene standards – each being given an even lower score of one by inspectors.

Chop Suey House scored just one out of a possible five after an inspection in October last year.

It was told to improve hygienic handling of food including preparation, as well as cleanliness and the condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene.

The Vinh Kee also got a score of one and has been told major improvement is necessary for the management of food safety.

It must put system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
