Newbury's Christmas carol concert this evening

For the past 10 years, the first Saturday of December has marked the start of Christmas for many in the area, with a charity fundraising evening of Christmas readings and music at St Nicolas’ Church.
The concert will be introduced by the former High Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire, Lady Catherine Stevenson, and the Pro Musica Choir of Oxford will lead the singing, with opportunities for everyone to join in on the well-known carols.
There will also be performances by young musicians and seasonal readings by the chief executive of Sovereign housing group Ann Santry, the headteacher of St Gabriel’s School, Alun Jones, Lady Emma Balding, international operatic tenor Kim Begley, and the rector of St Nicolas Church, the Rev Will Hunter Smart.
The appeal at the end of the programme will be made by the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, Mary Bayliss and proceeds will be divided between Macmillan and the Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust. The 10 concerts held to date have raised more than £160,000.
Tickets are priced £18 and the concert starts at 7pm at St Nicolas’ Church. For a ticket application form visit www.newburycancercare.org.uk, or telephone Sue Wood (01635) 32167.
