Newbury's market manager steps down after 14 years

Steve Brind honoured at special presentation at Newbury Town Hall

NEWBURY’S market manager, Steve Brind, has this week retired after 14 years in the role.

Mr Brind, who has become a well-known face at the market, was honoured at a special presentation at Newbury Town Hall on Monday night.

The popular market manager has overseen a number of changes over the years with its expansion into Northbrook Street and, back in 2006, the complete refurbishment of Market Place.

The role will now be taken on by Malcolm and Debbie Smith, of A&S Meats.

Mr Smith has been working at Newbury Market for more than 40 years, starting on his father’s butcher’s stall when he was still at school.

Speaking about his retirement, Mr Brind said: “I have enjoyed my time at the market over the years but I don’t think I’ll miss the early morning starts at 4am for set up.

“I wish Malcolm, Debbie and all the traders the best of the luck and hope to see the market flourish in the future”.

Leader of Newbury Town Council, Dave Goff, said: “We are very grateful to Steve for all of his hard work over the years and we look forward to working with Malcolm and Debbie Smith as they take over the reins.”
