'No cold calling' zones declared in West Berkshire
The Faircross Estate and Curridge Piece in Hermitage and Meadow Road, Newbury, are part of a scheme which is aimed at reducing unwanted cold calling and increasing awareness of doorstep crime.
In a survey conducted, 95 per cent of residents who responded were in favour of a ban on cold calling.
Signs will now be put into place to indicate this and cold calling will breach consumer protection laws.
West Berkshire Council's executive member responsible for public protection Hilary Cole (Con, Chieveley, pictured), said: "This is a good example of communities determining how they wish things to be in their own locality. We will now work with community to ensure that their wishes are complied with.”
Meadow Road resident, Lynne Bartholomew, who organised the survey, said: "The residents of Meadow Road that responded were 100 per cent in favour of a ban.
"The No Cold Calling Zone should make it clear that the residents don’t want to be cold called. We hope that traders will respect our wishes."
The zone has been organised West Berkshire Council’s trading standards department and Thames Valley Police.
