North Hampshire voters at Local Election polls
Ruled by the Conservatives for the past six years, the borough council has confirmed that one third – 21 of the total 60 seats – will be up for election this year.
Three councillors in the area are up for re-election to the borough council, with a vacancy in the Pamber and Silchester ward as councillor Keith Chapman (Con) steps down after more than three decades.
Councillors fighting to retain their seats in the area include Baughurst and Tadley North councillor, Michael Bound (Lib Dem), who faces opposition from two other candidates, Robert Tate (Con) and David Carr (Lab and Co-operative).
In Kingsclere, Cathy Osselton (Con) goes head-to-head with former Kingsclere parish councillor John Rodway (Lab), and in Tadley South, David Leeks (Con) has two opposing candidates: Peter McCann (Lab) and the chairwoman of Tadley Town Council, Jo Slimin (Lib Dem).
Mr Chapman’s departure leaves three candidates battling for the Pamber and Silchester seat, including former borough councillor and current Pamber parish councillor, Roger Gardiner (Con), former Silchester parish councillor, Terry Price (Lab) and the chairman of Silchester Parish Council, Steve Spillane (Independent).
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm today and the count will take place after polling stations close, at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke.
Listings of the above candidates’ details and photographs were published on pages 30 and 31 of the April 19 edition of the Newbury Weekly News.
Parish council elections were also due to take place around the local North Hampshire area at the May 3 local election polls, including in the three wards of Baughurst, Baughurst Common and Wolverton.
However, the borough council confirmed on Tuesday that these will not now be necessary, as the seats are uncontested.
