Northcroft outdoor pool is not closing, says council
West Berkshire Council has confirmed that it plans to open the pool next year after residents raised concerns over its future.
Newbury Labour Party spokesperson Richard Garvie also asked for assurances that the pool would be opening for business in 2013.
He said: "The outdoor pool at Northcroft is a massive asset to the town and the district, and is usually packed out when the sun is shining in the summer.
"I understand that the pool has it’s complications, but any plan to close the pool would be a disaster for the many who use the facility."
The leisure centre manager, Alex Godfrey from Parkwood Leisure, said that the pool was in the budget to open as normal next year and West Berkshire Council spokeswoman, Joanne Bassett, said that rumours of the closure were untrue.
After the confirmation, Mr Garvie said: "I'm very relieved, the pool is a one of a kind for the district and enjoyed by many.
"Hopefully it will revert back to it's traditional April to October opening this year so that local people can use the facility for longer."
The current pool dates back to the 1930s and is one of the largest remaining outdoor pools in England.
It usually opens in May but has been delayed in recent years due to maintenance work.
