Not guilty: James Tilley from Newbury is cleared of assault charges

A MAN accused of a double assault has been cleared after the charges against him were dismissed.

At a Reading Magistrates’ Court hearing in May, James Tilley pleaded not guilty to assaulting both Katie Freemantle and Lee Hart by beating them in Thatcham on September 18 last year.

The 34-year-old, of Enborne Gate, Newbury, also denied a third charge - that of causing £15 worth of criminal damage to a T-shirt belonging to Mr Hart on the same occasion.

Mr Tilley, who was legally represented at the hearing, spoke only to confirm his details and to plead not guilty all charges.

He was told the case could proceed no further that day and it would be adjourned for a trial to be arranged.

But on Thursday, September 19, he was cleared of all wrongdoing when the prosecution offered no evidence on all three charges.

They were formally dismissed and the court ordered Mr Tilley’s costs to be paid from central funds.
