Newbury nurse Sean Cregg charged in connection with death in police custody
A nurse working for Thames Valley Police has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter following a death in custody.
Thirty-five-year-old Sean Cregg from Newbury has also been charged with an offence under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act.
The head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) special crime division, Malcolm McHaffie, said: “Following a review of the evidence from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), we have authorised criminal charges against a healthcare professional after the death of William Cameron, aged 38, in 2020.
“Mr Cameron died after being taken in custody at Loddon Valley Police Station, near Reading in Berkshire on January 8, 2020.
“Sean Cregg, a nurse employed by Mountain Healthcare at the time, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and an offence under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
Mountain Healthcare provided services for Thames Valley Police and Mr Cregg was working in the police station as a custody nurse.
Mr McHaffie added: “No further individuals have been charged in connection with this case.
“The CPS reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that he has the right to a fair trial.
“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Mr Cameron, who was aged 38, was arrested and taken to Loddon Valley police station near Reading.
The IOPC said in a statement: “Mr Cameron had been arrested and taken into custody… and died later that day in hospital.
“Our investigation began the same day and concluded in March 2021.
“That month, we sent a file of evidence to the CPS to consider potential criminal charges.
“Following the referral, we received requests from the CPS for further material to assist with its decision-making.
“A police sergeant, who was also referred to the CPS, will not face charges.”
Mr Cregg is due to appear for a preliminary hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 1.
