Olli's 10 anniversary memorial run

Hundreds to take part in event

RUNNERS are gearing up for the 10th anniversary of the race in memory of Ollie Johnson on Sunday, June 7.

Ollie was an 18-year-old student from Kintbury who died in a car crash near Hungerford while on his way to school in December 2005.

He was a highly-promising middle distance runner at Newbury Athletic Club and previously attended Kintbury St Mary’s School, and both organisations now benefit from profits from the race.

He was also a keen member of Kintbury Tennis Club, which has also benefitted from race funds.

The main race is a five-mile circuit of Inkpen and Kintbury with an undulating route and lots of spectacular views and beautiful scenery.

There are also children’s races on the recreation ground in Kintbury over various distances open to all ages from toddlers upwards.

Race organiser Dave Wright said: “Inkpen and Kintbury Scout Group do a fantastic job on the catering and we look forward to lots of participants enjoying the races.”

The event regularly attracts more than 200 runners for the main event and around 50 younger runners.

Adults wishing to enter can follow the link at www.newburyac.org.uk or enter on the day for a small additional fee.

Children just need to register on the day, but should turn up at least 30 minutes before the start time of 10am.

This year’s event is the second in the West Berks Challenge which comprises races in Chieveley, Inkpen and Hungerford.

The Ollie Johnson Memorial Trust was established in 2005 to offer help and support to young athletes within the club and to enable them to reach their full potential.

The fund also purchases specific equipment for the young athletes, including track suits for juniors who compete for the club regularly.
