Olympic athlete inspires Burghclere pupils at school award ceremony
The awards were presented to The Clere school pupils by Cardiff-born sprinter Christian Malcolm, who represented Great Britain at the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, competing in the 200 metres, and has won European gold and Common-wealth bronze medals.
The school’s own local sporting achievements over the year were mentioned, with teams from Years 7, 8 and 9 becoming football five-a-side champions, and basketball champions in various local leagues.
Pupils’ individual sporting achievements included Key Stage 3 awards to Robert Barnes and Abigail Stamp for Sportsman/Sportswoman of the Year, and the same awards were given for Key Stage 4 to Toby Nethercot and Sarah Ladd.
Away from the sports field, academic achievements included those of Year 10 pupil, Matthew Pawley, who was awarded the Mathemtics Cup, and another Year 10 pupil, Tamara Johnson, who won the Graham Page Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
James Medcraft, from Year 9 and Grace Goslin, Year 10, both won the Chris Garner Award for Outstanding Contribution to Performing Arts, while Miai Abinger, from Year 9 was awarded the Key Stage 3 Design Award.
Congratulating all those who had achieved awards, the headteacher, Felicity Martin, said that the school, which had 690 pupils enrolled in 2011, was proud of them all.
“They demonstrate that they are here at school to relish their learning, to try their best and to learn how to be good citizens,” said Mrs Martin.
