Olympic Games motorways lanes cause 'confusion'

The Highways Agency has stated that the Games lane may be used by “members of the Games family including athletes, their officials and equipment arriving at Heathrow for their journey to the Olympic Village in Stratford.”
It may also be used by emergency vehicles, licensed taxis, Special Forces and vehicles being used for the purpose of incident management, such as traffic officer vehicles.
The lane will remain open until Saturday, August 4, and will be activated when needed between the hours of 5am and 10pm.
Motorists seen to be using the Games lanes during the activated hours face charges of up to £130, however general traffic is able to use them outside of the designated periods.
Yesterday, (Monday) saw the lane open between 6:30am and 11:40am. This combined with an accident at Maidenhead, sparked reports in national media of 32-mile tailbacks stretching on the M4 from London back to its junction with the A34 at Newbury.
However, a spokesman from the Highways Agency, Stuart Thompson, said that despite the first of the Games lanes opening the M4 had experienced “no delays over and above normal Monday traffic.”
There were further reports that the opening M4 Olympic lane had caused confusion on other roads yesterday, with users of the A4 and A40 avoiding Games lanes that aren’t due to be open until Wednesday, July 25.
