Olympic spirit lives on at school’s prizegiving

Team GB hockey captain Kate Walsh and team member Helen Richardson visited the school as guest speakers for the evening, which took the Olympic values of inspiration, excellence, courage and determination as its theme.
Following a speech from the sportswomen, pupils were presented with their GCSE certificates, subject awards and special prizes for contributions to the school and the community.
The prizewinners included Sophie Wells, who achieved the best overall GCSE results at the school, and Maria Anderson, Harry Barlow, Rory Breach, Alice Chambers, Tom Graves, Rachael Green, Daniel Holloway, Emma Hygate and Elliot Laker, who all achieved nine or more GCSEs at A*or A.
Elliot, who acted as a kit carrier in the Olympic stadium in the summer, was also awarded the ‘Living the Olympic Values’ award by the headteacher Derek Peaple.
The evening concluded with presentations to the school’s 25 Young Games Makers, who dedicated their time to volunteering for the London 2012 Olympics.
Ms Walsh and Ms Richardson also spent the day with sports pupils at the school to offer advice on motivation and training.
Mr Peaple said: “This was an amazing prizegiving ceremony in an amazing year.
“We are enormously proud of our inspirational students who were equally inspired by Kate and Helen and their achievements.”
