One giant leap for a fearless beardevil
Following a successful launch from Brightwalton village green, Babbage the fearless beardevil boldly went where no cuddly toy has gone before.
He then plummeted back to earth from an altitude of more than 39,000 metres at speeds of up to 200mph.
Baumgartner's Red Bull Stratos project set the world record when he skydived from a height of 38,969 metres last October.
Brightwalton softwear programmer David Akerman said: “I wanted to recreate it using a teddy bear - I thought it would be a laugh.”
Mr Akerman, aged 52, installed a low-cost Raspberry Pi computer and GPS softwear into Babbage before strapping him into a capsule and launching it beneath a weather balloon.
An electronic sensor ejected Babbage when he reached the target height over West Berkshire.
All the while, the computer inside him broadcast his status to Mission Control - Mr Akerman’s house in Saxons Acre - and beamed live photographs of his ascent before switching to video to record his fall.
His four hour descent ended in a field near Shaftesbury, Dorset, with Mr Akerman and friends pursuing in a chase car.
Babbage has been adopted by the computer manufacturers as an official mascot and video of his descent on YouTube has been viewed by more than 100,000 times round the world.
Mr Akerman previously broke the UK amateur record for the highest unmanned balloon flight in 2011 after launching a helium balloon from the village green.
He has not yet decided what to do with Babbage but said: "I think I will auction him off for charity."
