He has had a tough time since being at the trust, having been found with a broken leg when he first came in.

He has since had an operation to repair his leg and is currently recovering with a strict rest and rehab plan produced by the vets.

Despite these setbacks Casper is a very friendly, sociable boy who loves nothing more than leaning into your knee and being made a fuss of.

Dogs Trust Newbury is urging anyone with a dog-shaped hole in their life to consider adopting Casper or any of his fellow lurchers.

Even though they have a graceful appearance and a loving nature, lurchers can often spend longer at Dog’s Trust then other breeds.

Dogs Trust Newbury assistant manager Natasha Tarrant said: “Lurchers are loyal dogs that form very strong bonds with their owners.

“They are trustworthy and gentle, renowned for being affectionate so will bring a lot of love to their owner’s lives.”

She added: “It is a myth that they need a huge amount of exercise and long walks.

“They do need regular exercise like every dog, but they also very much relish lounging on the sofa.

“Lurchers really are at their happiest when they are with their owner, the one they love.”

What makes lurchers unique is their vast range of shapes and sizes, says Dogs Trust.

As they are sighthounds – such as a greyhound, whippet or saluki – crossed with another breed, they often vary in their hair length and colours, while still maintaining their long, graceful frames and deep chests.
