Claire French, prosecuting, said 43-year-old Martin Russell Coates was caught on CCTV.
Mr Coates, of Kyftle Court, St Michaels Road, Newbury, admitted stealing detergents worth £35 from Scats in Hectors Way, Newbury, on October 27 this year.
He has previous convictions, the court was told.
Mike Davis, defending, said: “He hasn’t been in trouble for some time and is genuinely disappointed in himself. His partner gave him money to buy shopping but unfortunately he spent it on booze. He was concerned about her reaction.”
Mr Coates was made subject to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £35 compensation with £15 surcharge.
