Open air coffee plan gets the nod

The application, submitted by Hetherton's of Berkshire, seeks to place five tables and 20 chairs in front of the Clocktower in the Broadway, partially enclosed by canvas barriers
Speaking at a meeting of Newbury Town Council's planning and highways committee, Mark Hetherton answered questions about the distance that hot food and drinks would have to be carried to the tables on the Broadway, approximately 30 meters from the bakery's premises at the Kings Coffee House.
Mr Hetherton said: We will take great care and ensure our staff are trained properly.
"We think it is a great thing to have in that area of the town, as businesses and people on lunch breaks will benefit by being able to have a coffee outside."
Councillors unanimously supported the application and Eliabeth O'Keefe (Lib Dem, Victoria) said that there were plenty of precedents for this feature, which was echoed by Tony Stretton (Con, Clay Hill) who said: "I am all for this and would like to see it happen."
A previous application for seating was withdrawn last year due to a lack of scale drawings and licensing information.
A decision is expected from West Berkshire council by May 9.
