Plans to stage an outdoor boxing exhibition on Newbury’s streets will go ahead after councillors granted permission for a one-off event.

Newbury Business Improvement District submitted plans in August to add provision of “regulated entertainment – boxing and wrestling” from Monday to Sunday, 11am until 10pm, at the Market Place and for “occasional outdoor boxing events”.

The plan was to hold one exhibition on Sunday, September 13, followed by the possibility of future boxing events in the town.

It was confirmed this week that West Berkshire Council would issue a temporary notice for the one-off event to be held on Sunday, but any further variations would need to be negotiated with the licensing department.

Council spokeswoman Peta Stoddart-Crompton confirmed: “The BID have served the council with a temporary event notice which has not been objected to and will therefore go ahead for a one-off demonstration of boxing provided by Thames Valley Amateur Boxing Club.

“The demonstration will be under controlled conditions and performed by the youth members.”

The exhibition is planned to go ahead at Market Place from noon to 2.30pm on Sunday.

It will feature youngsters from Thames Valley Amateur Boxing Club and will be an exhibition event only, not full-scale boxing bouts.
