Over 100 trees planted in Newbury by Sewa Day, Newbury Town Council and Greenham Trust as part of community drive
Over 100 trees have now been planted on a recreation ground in Newbury as part of an initiative promoting environmental conservation and sustainable urban development.
Indian charity Sewa Day partnered with Newbury Town Council and Greenham Trust to embark on its third plantation drive at the Hutton Close recreation ground north of Robin Hood Roundabout.
The drive took place on Saturday, February 3 and on the day, 38 saplings were planted.
Overall, 108 saplings – which were all donated by Greenham Trust – have been planted since December.
The event brought together residents of all ages, as well as local dignitaries and environmental enthusiasts.
Sewa Day member Sanjeev Agarwala said: “The enthusiasm was palpable as families, neighbours, and volunteers worked hand in hand, digging, planting, and nurturing the greenery that would soon adorn the neighbourhood.
“Children eagerly joined in, learning about the significance of each tree they planted and eagerly envisioning the future canopy they were helping to create.
“As the last sapling found its new home in the fertile soil of Hutton Close, a sense of accomplishment permeated the air.
“With each tree firmly rooted in the ground, the community took a collective step towards a more sustainable future, reaffirming their commitment to preserving the planet for generations to come.
“In the wake of the third plantation drive at Hutton Close, one thing remains abundantly clear: when communities unite with nature as their common cause, the possibilities for positive change are endless.”
On the previous drives, Newbury mayor Nigel Foot lauded the community's initiative, recognising the vital role grassroots efforts play in fostering environmental sustainability.
Sewa Day is a UK nationwide charity with the central ethos of performing acts of kindness for others without the expectation of any rewards.
It undertake projects in collaboration with local organisations like councils and other charities.
Earlier this year, the Newbury-based arm of the charity raised funds for the plantation drive initiative at a charity coffee morning at the town hall which was generously supported by the people of Newbury.
