Over 80s are the winners as Quiz team Lose the Plot
Fundraising is still happening, and the NWN Annual Over 80s Sports Quiz took place last Thursday (21), at The Bowler’s Arms in Wash Common, and was its usual runaway success with sports enthusiasts battling it out to win the bottles of whisky, donated again this year by Budgens, Wash Common. More important than the whisky, possibly, is the prestige that goes with winning the title. The 2013 winning team was called Lost the Plot. Congratulations to them, and everyone else who took part.
We had super raffle prizes, and our thanks go to Camp Hopson, Newbury Racecourse, The Bowlers Arms and English Provender Company for donating prizes which helped raise more than £100.
Thanks go to the quizmaster, Steve Smith and last but not least The Bowlers Arms for agreeing to host the quiz night for us again. Together this year the quiz and the raffle raised a total of £320 to go towards the food parcels.
Collections took place last weekend and thanks go to the Kennet School pupils, Downe House School girls and also the Newbury Rotary Club who all either bag-packed at Sainsbury’s or collected at the door to help us pay the very large food bill that has already appeared on my desk. I would like to thank them all for giving up some of their invaluable time to help raise money towards the Over 80s Parcel Fund. The money is still being counted, but between them they have raised around £1,000.
At the same time as the collections were happening, we also had the chance to go and have coffee and taste a delicious cake with the Mayor of Newbury, in the town hall. I would like to thank them very much indeed for holding this event and bringing in another £200 towards this year’s food parcels.
As I write, Cubs from all over Newbury are being rounded up to help do the packing of the food parcels at Sainsbury’s on Sunday.
We have 1st Newbury, Greenham, Inkpen and Kintbury, Wash Common and 3rd Newbury Cubs who have all volunteered to give up some time on Sunday, as have Sainsbury’s and Vodafone staff to help us pack more than 2,100 food parcels.
My thanks go to Paul Jackson from 3rd Newbury for gathering the troops.
It is all happening at Parcel Towers, so to keep abreast of the latest developments read next week’s Newbury Weekly News.
