Staff immediately alerted the fire service, which sent three fire pumps, a support vehicle and a foam unit to the incident from stations in Newbury, Tilehurst and Reading, due to the flammable substances at the site.
An inspection by fire crews found it was a mechanical fault which had caused the pump to overheat and caused a small fire.
Fire crews isolated the flame and made the area safe, before leaving the scene at around 1.30am.
