M4 overnight closures begin tonight until March near Membury services, between junction 15 for Swindon and junction 14 at Hungerford

The first of more than a dozen overnight closures of the M4 through part of West Berkshire begin tonight (Monday).

The closures are being put in place to allow National Highways to carry out essential resurfacing of the eastbound carriageway near Membury services.

The first overnight full eastbound closure, between junctions 15 at Swindon and 14 at Hungerford, is tonight (Monday), with the exit from Membury services remaining open.

Victoria Bathe, National Highways project manager, said: “This vital resurfacing work will provide a safer, smoother and quieter road for both drivers and communities nearby for many years to come.

“We plan our work carefully to minimise disruption and we are carrying out most of this maintenance at night when traffic is at its lightest.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank drivers for their patience and remind those planning on passing through this section of the M4 – or using one of our diversion routes – to allow extra time to complete their journeys.”

A number of lane closures have already been in place on that stretch of the motorway this month and there will be around 12 more overnight closures needed between now and March.

The next closure will take place on Thursday (January 30), then again on Thursday, February 6 and for two nights from Monday, March 3.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the hard shoulder, as well as lanes one and two will be shut, but Membury services will be open.

On Wednesday (January 29), the hard shoulder, lane one and lane two will again be closed but the entry and exit to Membury services will also be shut.

There will be a full eastbound carriageway closure, where the entry and exit to Membury services will also be shut, on Friday (January 31); on Friday, February 2; for five nights from Monday, February 10; for four nights from Monday, February 24; and on Wednesday, March 5.

There may also be a full eastbound carriageway closure, with the entry and exit to Membury services closed, on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7, if the works have not yet been completed.

A diversion for HGVs is in place via the A346 London Road, A4 Bath Road, Strongrove Hill, Charnham Street, Bath Road, Eddington Hill, then by the A338 to rejoin the M4 at junction 14.

Other traffic is being diverted via the A419 northbound, the B4192 Purley Road, Charnham Street, Bath Road, Eddington Hill and onto the A338 to rejoin the M4 at junction 14.

National Highways is reminding drivers to plan their journeys ahead of the series of closures.

Motorists are also urged to pay attention to the diversion signage rather than sat navs to ensure they follow the appropriate route.
