Pair all set for Newbury to New Zealand charity ride
Challenge will take Newbury duo through 20 countries in a year
A pair from Newbury will embark on a year-long bike ride next week that will take them from Newbury to New Zealand, all in aid of a children’s cancer charity.
Lorna Davies and Ian Black will leave the UK on May 16 to raise funds for children and young people’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
The duo hope to raise £5,000 for the charity which provides practical, emotional and financial support for cancer sufferers and their families.
Mr Black said: “We are taking part in a cycling expedition through 20 countries, starting in Newbury and finishing in New Zealand.
“We both really enjoy a challenge, travelling and cycling and want to support children and young people facing cancer.”
Lorna added: “We want to experience and gain insight into different cultures.
“I have never been to many of the countries we are planning on going to such as China and Mongolia and can’t wait.”
CLIC Sargent Challenge events manager Claire Dibben said: “We’re delighted Ian and Lorna have signed up to take part in this cycling expedition from Newbury to New Zealand, and wish them the very best of luck.
“Events like this are a great way for people to challenge themselves while making a huge difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer, and their families.
“CLIC Sargent provides support, including social workers, nurses and free accommodation near hospitals to help families whose lives have been turned upside down by cancer.”
Lorna is a nurse who works at Southampton’s University Hospital at the cardiac surgery ward and is currently on sabbatical to take part in the challenge.
Ian will leave his job as Lily Hill Park manager, which is owned by Bracknell Forest Council.
Ahead of the ride, the couple said that the longest time they had spent away on a cycling holiday was just three weeks.
