Two Ecchinswell and Sydmonton Primary School pupils win the 2024 St Gabriel’s Year 5 maths challenge
Two pupils from Ecchinswell and Sydmonton Primary School were the victorious team at the 2024 Year 5 maths challenge at St Gabriel’s.
The challenge, which took place on Friday, February 9, saw more than 30 local schools competing and Josie and Fleur from the North Hampshire school were the winners.
They competed in the challenge alongside their fellow Ecchinswell and Sydmonton pupils Connor and Sebastian.
Children taking part had to do various number calculations, solve problems with a broken calculator, use pentominoes to create given shapes and use their understanding of measurements to plan out a motorcycle route.
Year 5 teacher Mark Bulpitt said: “All the children thoroughly enjoyed the different mathematical problems which they attacked with excellent reasoning skills.
“The experience of doing maths in a different situation and competing against other schools brought out the best from them.
“Throughout the competition they had smiles on their faces. Winning was the icing on the cake.”
Assistant head Emma Hartley said: “We are an extremely small school so this was an amazing achievement.”
