Panel could 'enhance' history of Newbury

THE history of Newbury could soon be enhanced by the erection of a panel with information about the bombing of the town almost 70 years ago.

Newbury man David Clow is currently gathering information and personal stories about the bombing of Newbury on February 10, 1943, in which 15 people were killed and extensive damage was caused to several parts of the town.

He is hoping to install a small plaque or panel somewhere in Newbury with information about the event and the names of those people killed, although the exact details of what will be included on the panel and where it will go have yet to be decided.

Funding has been made available from Newbury Town Council though and Mr Clow said he is hoping to formulate a plan for the panel next month, after he has compiled a report based on all the information he has received, including some since he had a letter published in Newburytoday.co.uk's sister paper, the Newbury Weekly News three weeks ago.

He said: “It is fascinating really and there are a lot of reminisces about the bombing.

“It is a really interesting story and it seems that Reading and Newbury were bombed on the same day.”

Mr Clow said the reason for the project was to enhance the history of Newbury and he said he was still keen to hear from anyone who had any photographs, stories or any other information about the event.

He can be contacted via email at clow@ntlworld.com or by telephone on 01635 40188.
