Paramedics locked out of park as boy is left with broken ankle

Eleven-year-old Jake Reid broke his ankle at Newbury skatepark in Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon when an adult male cycled over his leg.
When Jake’s mother, Felicity, returned from the town centre to collect her son at about 4.30pm she found him injured.
“I’m disgusted with the man who ran Jake over and left him,” Mrs Reid said. “We thought we were leaving Jake in an area for young people. The person who ran our son over was well over twenty. There should also be an age limit at the skatepark.
“We would like to suggest that the skatepark should be for skaters and scooters only, and not used for bicycles.
“Also, the ambulance crew didn’t have a key to get into the park, which is ridiculous, especially when there’s a skatepark there.”
Newbury Town Council’s chief executive, Graham Hunt, said users of the skatepark should give each other space while using the facility.
He added: “We have to protect the park from unauthorised access to the park and that’s why it’s locked. It would be impracticable for the emergency services to have keys to every enclosed area. However, I have asked our services manager, Granville Taylor, to get in touch with all the emergency services to see what we can do regarding access to the park.
“When we have organised events we have first aid at on site and make sure emergency services can access the site.
“This is an unfortunate incident and we hope the boy makes a speedy recovery.”
Mrs Reid, who said her son cannot start his first term at Christ's Hospital School, West Sussex, because he will be in plaster for five weeks, added: “I would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who looked after my son on Saturday. I would particularly like to thank the gentleman from Burghfield who was with his two daughters and looked after Jake. We have no idea what the gentleman's name was but he wrapped our son, who was in shock, in his fleece to keep him warm until the ambulance arrived. He was a true Good Samaritan.
“There were also two lads who carried Jake to a picnic bench.”
