Parish council 'name and shame' Tesco over litter problem

Eight binbags of rubbish were collected by a team of Newbury wardens close to the Pinchington Lane store last week, on a unofficial footpath used by people to get to the store from the A339.
Council chairman Tony Forward blamed the superstore for the build up of litter, saying that failure to repair a broken fence quickly enough last year meant that students from neighbouring Newbury College used it on a daily basis.
He said: “Tesco should be named and shamed for this.
“The public aggressively assumed the right to use it [the footpath] to the extent they break down any attempt to close it.
“Tesco has created a situation where Greenham Parish Council is paying wardens to do a job that should never have been required, which prevents them from doing other useful things in the parish.”
Tesco spokeswoman Hannah Carolin said: “We want to play our part in keeping our community
tidy and our colleagues work hard to ensure the area around the store is kept clean.
“They regularly check the car park and hedgerow areas for any litter.
“The damaged fence has repeatedly been repaired and we would ask our customers to stick to the footpaths when accessing the store.”
