A Parish council held its latest meeting in a pub car park this week, amid growing cases of coronavirus.

East Ilsley Parish Council’s meeting on Tuesday was held in The Swan pub car park
due “to the rapid spread of Omicron and the inability to hold virtual meetings for
official parish council business”.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, a change in legislation meant that councils were permitted to hold meetings virtually, rather than in person, but that ended last year.

Clerk to East Ilsley Parish Council, Fenella Woods, said they had decided to move the meeting outside as they didn’t want to place a further burden on the school where meetings were usually held.

“Because we don’t have a village hall in East Ilsley we rely on using the school hall,” she explained.

“I clean all the chairs before and after a meeting, but with Omicron being so much more prevalent it is best this way.”

January is the meeting where parish and town councils must approve its annual budget and set its precept, so it must be held in person – come rain or shine.

The public were invited to attend – wrapped up warm and with a torch – and four people were present.

Mrs Woods added: “It did go really well. I put up a pop up gazebo and brought a garden table from home and a couple of camping chairs.

“We had four members of the public who brought their camping chairs and sat in a row. We flew through business as quickly as we could.

“We have now managed to agree a temporary scheme of authorisation.

“It should make things a bit safer for us.”

A pre-planning application for a new 5G mast on Fidlers Lane was also discussed at the meeting.
